A new study by researchers at Harvard has found that a combination of a popular cholesterol-lowering drug, Lipitor, and a prescription medicine, Crestor, can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The new study suggests that taking an individual risk factors combination could also be protective.
“Although the use of statins (prescribed for high cholesterol) could increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, it does not appear to protect against heart disease in patients who are taking statins,” said Dr. R. Thompson, a professor of family medicine at Harvard Medical School and author of the new study. “Further research is needed to identify the mechanisms by which these drugs increase the risk of heart disease in the long term.”
Researchers used data from over 400,000 people who took a combination of the drug Lipitor and Crestor, and found that people who took Crestor had a greater risk of developing heart disease. The researchers also found that taking an individual risk factors combination increased the risk of heart attack and stroke.
“To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale study to assess the effects of statin use on the risk of heart disease,” said Dr. Michael T. Hahn, the study’s lead author. “These results suggest that combination therapy may be a safe and effective treatment option for people with heart disease who do not take statins.”
The new study comes after the Food and Drug Administration has approved several other drugs for heart disease.
